On Sept. 8, Literacy Volunteers Western Cook County will celebrate International Literacy Day. Founded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Literacy Day is celebrated worldwide. The intent of International Literacy Day is to call attention to the importance of advancing worldwide literacy.

Chan selected as new literacy council exec. director
The Branch County Literacy Council, at its August meeting, confirmed the appointment of Lynda Chan as its new executive director. Chan is replacing Ruth Vanderpool-Combs, who after 10 years as the Literacy Council’s executive director, has returned to school to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. Chan begins her new endeavor on Sept. 7.
